Life is not guaranteed to be easy, never turning out the exact way that we want it to. A lot of people work hard to achieve their dreams of making a massive amount of money and having more than a seven percent return on their k plan. Truth is, life is not about the amount of money that we have saved up, it is about what we do to make a difference and how we will make our lifetime worth it. Something that people should set into place is a plan for their future. A plan that would help not only directs their path in life, but the paths of those around them too. I have always wanted to make a difference in the world, and this gives me the chance. Performing justice the right way and making sure that the laws of the government are obeyed is the job that I want to pursue. Being a Police Officer is a challenging job but also very rewarding. There would be a number of skills I would need to learn, not to mention that every day on the job would be a learning experience itself. Even if my actions were not as simple as that, for example, if I were to witness an accident or arrive onto the scene of one, just being there gives me the opportunity to take preventative measures. When I become a Police Officer, it would also allow me to help other people to help themselves. If I were to pull over a speeder, or a drunk driver, I would be able to show them a better way even though they would be punished.


If they get a ticket, the possibility of them speeding or driving under the influence again would be smaller than before. Entering the career of law enforcement is not always easy. Becoming a Police Officer means that I would become a justified employee of the police force. When the first Europeans came over to the United States, they felt that it was necessary to protect themselves and their people from the inhabitants that were already here and had no interest in sharing their land with them. Any man and young boy that was physically able to protect their people was required to do so. There was a possibility of seeing one the previous inhabitants in stocks throughout town. What started off small eventually grew to become something big, and as their towns expanded, so did the need for their police force, which instead of being something that was forced voluntary, it became paid.


It was in sixteen thirty-six that the Night Watch was introduced in Boston. That only worked if the area was relatively small, which is why New York City introduced something called the Shout and Rattle Watch in sixteen fifty-one. The Rattle watch was a group of people who patrolled from dusk until dawn. They were called the Rattle watch because they made a lot of noise. By the seventeen hundreds, Philadelphia had divided their city into ten different patrol areas. Once we reached the eighteen hundreds, the first independent police force was established.


New York eventually decided that there needed to be two separate shifts, so in they started daytime duty and night watch. This was when the Police Chief was introduced, they were chosen by the Mayor during that time. The community always chose the Sheriff, but they were also chosen by their reputation, which was not always necessarily the best. Police Officers have become more and more important as time has gone on, so much so that the unemployment rate for a Police Officer is zero percent. The chance of being qualified to become a Police Officer is not great. I would have to pass my written test, then my physical test. Then, when I pass those I would need to go through a background check, a psychological evaluation and then a polygraph. After I successfully pass those tests I would have to go to the academy, which would take about twelve to fourteen weeks. After the academy I would start field training so that I would be able to become my own independent officer. The best training would be when I would start patrolling the streets on my own. The many test and evaluations I would have to go through proves how serious they are about whom they employ as officers. There are different ranks of Police Officers.


When I first go into my career I would be a Patrol Officer. While I am a Patrol Officer, I would maintain public order so that I could keep the general public safe, respond to emergencies, enforce motor vehicle laws along with criminal laws, have to testify in court and do a lot of paperwork regarding reviews of incidents and other things. After being a Patrol Officer for a while I would then have the opportunity to become a Sergeant. As a Sergeant I would supervise lower ranked officers, plan the work schedules, examine activity reports and decide to do about those activities based on what they say.


Next in line would be a Lieutenant. I would be in charge of overseeing the bureau and the staff that is in it, along with observing and assessing crime trends. When I am moved up to Captain I could be assigned to a specific division, such as Homicide, Narcotics, Organized crime, or Juvenile services. I would also be in charge of training other officers. Another thing that I would need to be prepared for when I become a Police Officer is having that become my main duty. Long hours and having to travel on short notice; it would become a very big part of my life. There are many health and safety hazards that I would be constantly dealing with. My family might be worried because of everyday dangers. Overtime is something that would not be uncommon for me. My salary would be more than thirty to fifty thousand dollars a year. I might get my associates degree in criminal justice, a foreign language or computer science. Even though it is not necessary, getting a degree would give me more credentials so that I would have more of a chance to get hired. Getting a degree in criminal justice would teach me everything about the justice system, something that I have a very strong belief in. Learning everything about the justice system would be extremely helpful in the long run.


Criminal justice would teach me about the law, sociology, public administration, psychology, and more.
